1 2 WATCH: J Spills

A new name is seeping into the UK drill scene; drowning the genre’s one dimensional nonchalance, and challenging its convention. J Spills’ booming voice is as gruff as his vivid lyrical ponderings. The rapper’s dynamic and unfiltered sound is a breath of fresh air in the increasingly overproduced, rap-cap elixir of unauthentic dross that drill is in danger of being engulfed by.

The Newham rapper has so far released three excellent singles. His debut, ‘Malis and Asians’, is a grit-fuelled tale of backstreet bootings and unnerving peacocking. His sophomore offering ‘Visa Debit’ continued in the same raw and robust direction, with the GRM Daily released track amassing over 133k views. His most recent effort, the Mixtape Madness released ‘Daylight’, is perhaps his most impressive release to date, with Spill’s snappy flow, intelligent wordplay and enthrallingly deep tones on full show over an ominous instrumental.

Me and Spills chopped it up about the direction of the drill scene and why the budding talent is 1 2 WATCH.

Who's influencing you?

I would say I’m taking in a lot of genres at the moment. But when it comes to drill for example, i’ll hear my bro DR go hard on a track and instantly want to go studio. I’ve been listening to a lot of Key Glock and Young Dolph right now though, so its deffo a bag i’d wanna explore

How does it feel to be releasing music and gaining plaudits?

Feels good, setting up my corner in this music ting. And for people to be taking man in so early on in my journey. Makes me go harder.

How do you think you can make your impact felt in the overly condensed drill scene?

You just gotta bring something unique. So many man doing this drill ting it’s easy for it to get over saturated, but my angle in the new tracks that I’ve got coming will show you why I’m different.

What do you think of the general direction that the scene is heading in?

I think it’s heading in positive direction. We ain’t ever had this many eyes on our type of music before so it’s deffo a good look.

Where do the ideas for your new single stem from?

The main core of the song came off a phone call I had with my bro’s GA and shallow. They’re locked up atm and were both on bang up. We was talking about something like daylight is a rare commodity for them right now. More time I just draw inspiration from my day-to-day happenings.

What's to come from you?

More quality music, I’m trying to flood the streets. Gotta make sure I’ve left my stamp in this ting when it’s all said and done.
