Traveller's Guide
Following the release of her debut EP ‘Nesting’, Liyah Knight presents another stunning project - a six track EP titled ‘Traveller’s Guide’. In a playful exploration of self the listener hears Knight delve into a variety of influences from traditional R&B to intense electronic basslines. It appears that as Knight continues to learn about herself, she is using her music to do so.
The project begins with ‘Moon Baby’ a soulful number that draws the listener in close as she croons about her encounters with love, heartbreak and the areas in between. The chorus erupts into the sweetest vocals bringing about a sensation akin to blackberries bursting on your tongue.
Knight weaves us through her introspection with the following tracks. ‘Threads’ is a particularly impressive piece of artistry because her use of synthesizers bleeds over into an explosion of electronic beats that mimic the crescendo you’d hear at a night club while maintaining the intimacy of the subject matter of the record.
‘No Strings’ blends all of Knight’s musical inclinations into a singular track. Featuring Cryrus x IAMMXO, Knight embodies her storytelling abilities, reminiscing on an ‘almost relationship’ and the process of letting go. It’s the perfect sultry finale, Knight leaves everything behind including the past versions of herself.
When an artist is able to allow such a deep level of vulnerability with his or her audience the process resembles a pact, a promise to hold space for one another and to relate. It’s a true pleasure to listen to such a talented artist grow into herself, grappling with her inner world and finding a way to translate that wealth of experience into a cohesive body of work. It’s no doubt that Liyah Knight will continue to blossom as she delves deeper into herself.
