Tell Me A Ting Remix
For those reminiscing about times like the early 2000s, where grime was at its peak and crews like Pay As U Go were spitting bars together in one-of-a-kind group sessions, it can be hard to find the same infectious energy in today’s market; where single artists skyrocket to fame and tend to dominate the charts. That’s why D Double E’s new release ‘Tell Me a Ting - Remix” feels so refreshing: aside from an all-star lineup featuring P Money, Frisco, BackRoad Gee, and Novelist, the sound echoes back to classic grime in a way that is profoundly electrifying. The beat ties it all in together: a vintage-esque comic book beat that sounds like it’s straight out of a 1960s Batman programme––this seems only fitting for a superhero reunion of stars, after all. I’d say that P Money’s powerful opening really is the shining star of the remix, though it is worth noting the two younger artists’ approaches to the beat compared with their classic grime seniors. While I consider that both Backroad Gee and Novelist tend to dazzle on more minimalist beats––which allows their unique vocals to shine––they both came at the liveliness of ‘Tell Me a Ting’ with a surprising ruthlessness. Is the VIP remix better than the original (featuring Kano)? Arguably, I think yes––the wave of these new voices in grime inject vitality into the song and keep it hot.
