Parity

While celebrating the trappings of hard-earned wealth might be a key theme of U.K rap’s mainstream, South London outlier AKS is looking beyond the here and now with his latest, ethereal offering ‘Parity’ - a deeply personal, introspective cut that explores the pressures and aspirations of a Black father, determined to ensure his son’s starting point in life has moved beyond his own beginnings. His son was present for the making of the track and AKS hopes that experience will be a lasting memory for him. When we think of generational wealth, precious memories are worth their weight in gold.

‘Parity’ is entirely self-produced and musically, it’s a dreamy, warm rap cut that’s blessed with the rich textures of live instrumentation. Of the track, AKS tells us:

I’ve been blessed to have great musician friends like Adrian Remedy [guitar] who is also a father. I’m constantly bouncing ideas off him. He totally understood the theme and emotion behind the song as both a musician and a father. Those guitar licks are the backbone of the song and trigger something in me everytime I play it.
