Mistake

There is no justifiable number of superlatives to summarise South London singer/songwriter Jaz Karis’ latest release, ‘Mistake’. Karis keeps it simple instrumentally, stripping it right back and let the singer shine. Oh, does Jaz put on an exemplary performance. Layering a slow and progressive guitar, her sultry r&b vocals delicately divert the attention captured with the arpeggiated chords in the introduction, proceeding describe her experiences through vulnerable narration.

A Brit School alumnus, and future voice of the radio, Jaz is exploring a style that is appreciated by many. When it comes to reviewing music, I think it’s unfair to compare artists for the sake of comparing artists; it should only be when there is a genuine similarity. I’m not going to throw in likenesses, as I think it’s fair to say Jaz’s sound is carefully curated. It’s through tireless dedication that she has been able to master her craft, and big up for that. It’s her sound... and she owns it.

‘Mistake’ is a perfect example of how simplicity has this wonderful ability to connect with listeners. Having become familiar with Jaz’s music in 2020, with her most recent EP ‘All Eyes On U’, I’m very much looking forward to tapping in and observing the journey from afar. If you fancy something to pour a glass of red to, or alternatively something to put on when you are getting ready in the morning, waiting for the coffee to kick in, then ‘Mistake’ is the one for you.
