Come Over Ft Popcaan

Jorja Smith has enlisted Popcaan to sing on her newest single ‘Come Over’ in their first-ever collaboration. Popcaan’s verse over the steady beat adds dancehall undertones to the track, complementing Jorja’s elegant vocals. In the animated video directed by Amber Grace Johnson, the singer-songwriter is pictured in a dark futuristic world, racing on a space-age motorcycle across the city at hundreds of miles an hour. Jorja sings,

I don’t know if you want me to come over, I don’t wanna ask really I should know better

touching on the difficulties of communicating with a love interest and not knowing what the other person wants.

Jorja makes subtle statements throughout ‘Come over’ with the opening scene panning out to a cityscape that shows a Black Lives Matter billboard atop one of the high-rise buildings. When a man touches her inappropriately in the club, she takes him out with a striking blow to the face, exposing his robotic interior. She deals with the other men who come to his defence by whipping them with the locks of her hair. This latest release is an exciting move from Jorja, ‘Come Over’ deploys a bold and action-packed animation to tell a story that wouldn’t have been captured in the sound alone. With Stormzy’s empowering animated video for ‘Superheroes’ and ‘Come over’, a new trend might be on the horizon. Watch this space!
