Be Your Own Boyfriend

'Be My Own Boyfriend' is the latest single released by London songwriter Olivia Dean. The single accompanies the news of the singer’s third EP ‘Growth’, which will be released this summer via AMF Records. The vast degree of success attributed to her sophomore EP ‘What Am I Gonna Do On Sundays’ leaves much to be anticipated from the burgeoning talent that is Olivia Dean.

‘What Am I Gonna Do On Sundays’ was a self-admitted breakup EP but her latest track delves into contrasting elements of the same subject matter as Olivia is seen to embrace independence on a track laced in self-affirmations and positivity.

She said the following about the meaning behind the track:

It’s a very societal thing that you’re always looking for your Prince Charming or that when you meet this person that you’ll be ‘whole’ or ‘successful’, like that’s the end goal. But I think the end goal is being happy by yourself, and if you do meet someone then it’s a really cute accessory - a cute addition to my life, but it’s not completing my life. It’s not the whole look, he’s just the bag!

Over a measured guitar riff, soft coos and a muted glockenspiel, Olivia moves to bring attention to this theme of emotional introversion as she carefully articulates her relationship derived frustrations, pairing this with words detailing the peace found in self-love. The chorus provides the clearest example of these sentiments as she utilises third person speech to accentuate the multi-faceted nature of her being.
