Paper Cup

At just 18, dexter has already shown the world that she’s an incredible artist capable of speaking her mind and making amazing music. Her new tune ‘Paper Cup’ backs internalised anxieties with danceable grooves, producing an eerily upbeat ode to troubled times.

Out now via Common Knowledge, the track is dexter’s first release since her self-aware debut EP I Do Love A Good Sandwich, which landed earlier this year. The singer-songwriter/producer has a knack for creating tunes that encapsulate youthful fears in a candid and endearing space. This intimacy and private expression is apparent throughout her catalogue, and inherent in her early releases being produced from a handheld phone.

Despite its title, faded filters and KAYTRANADA-esque bounce, ‘Paper Cup’ is not a party track about topping up liquor. dexter explains that it’s “about me feeling overwhelmed by my thoughts and how that can often stop me from doing the simplest of things, for example just getting a cup of water to drink”. She shows how that scenario can still be a stress, even when sober.

The South-West Londoner has also announced her first live gig, or “lo-fi gathering”, set to take place in the capital, November 26th. Friend-made visuals for ‘Paper Cup’ are also viewable above.
