Mercedes

Toronto’s finest Rohan takes his unique take on modern rap to a new unfounded high on the psychedelic, emotional and compulsive ‘Mercedes’. With a sound spanning across several genes, Rohan takes influence from R&B and hip hop sonically whilst bringing in more international sensibilities in a subtle and astute manner. On his latest cut, he ponders family, culture and millennialism in a sophisticated and understated way, with heart warming themes and plundering 808’s.

Rohan combines spacey, soaring production and meandering atmosphere with effortlessly tight delivery, offering an eclectic range of flows that ride the beat with ease and nuance. Where so many others have failed, Rohan manages to use autotune stylistically and in a shrewd and intriguing way, lending his striking vocal a further layer of sonic texture. Lyrically, the track is effectively a love letter to his mother, as he talks of working as hard as he can, to get the woman who raised him to a place where she deserves to be. It’s not often you find a song this way inclined generically with such good intentions.

Within the trippy guitar sample and heavy 808’s that thunder their way through the track, there is real artistry and emotional depth in this track. Both lyrically and musically detailed, this is a very giving, entertaining listen.
