Opening with some warm, albeit dissonant organ swells against a glocky straight 808 beat, Birdhouse instantly caught my attention. Hailing from Haarlem (Yes you read it right, it’s a city in the north of Holland) and Amsterdam, Birdhouse is actually a collective. The name is derived from the large old building in Haarlem where the group of artists signed to the Amsterdam based label INI Movement jam and record for days on end. Influences seem to stem from Afro/Latin Jazz and all its equally as important subsidiaries and the family feel of this collective is very strong.

The production on this particular track boasts on-the-beat bass, organ stabs and a hypnotic cascading synth flute line. The drum production is exquisite, managing to remain in the Shuggie Otis realm of 70’s analog drum box funk, whilst sounding current due to the subtle quality of the consistently divergent rhythm patterns. Moments of acapella showcase the mitosis of high quality art being produced within this collective, it is comforting to hear underground music this well sang. Be sure to also check out Birdhouse Sessions, Vol. 1 for some breezy uplifting expertly played instrumental jams. Stopboringme approves.
