‘Flowers’ are simply not enough for Brighton’s Elli Ingram as she shows off her talent in spectacular fashion on her latest of a growing line of solid releases. This track is moody and angry, yet it also manages to be melodically captivating and sonically pleasing. This is a breakup banger; a tale of love, spite, mistrust and impatience.

Elli’s deep and husky voice is jam-packed with personality, and it is mixed well with the powerful jazz/pop instrumental. The colourful vocals own the beat and command the listener to heed and feel the frustrations that our narrator is suffering from. Lyrically, Elli tackles relationship stereotypes with sustained wit and sass, on lines like “don’t tell me to come down / don’t turn this shit around”. The percussion and bassline hold much of the emphasis of the beat, while the authoritative horns provide some much-needed counter melody that gives the song a dynamic and compelling energy.

This is a very British, very immersive track that finds the balance between insecurity and bitterness. Having been around for a while now, it is probably about time Elli Ingram started getting some serious attention.
