Black 2

Fresh off the back of his Kent Jamz collaborative project, Janktape Vol.1, Compton’s Buddy drops the sequel to 2018’s A$AP Ferg assisted, trap-laced banger, ’Black’. On the follow-up, ‘Black 2’, Buddy reverts to the easygoing West Coast energy which underpins so much of his work, but the content is just as vital as its predecessor.

Over hypnotic looped synths, which nod towards California’s G-Funk heritage, the track is both a celebration of Blackness and a critique of anyone who fakes love for Black culture while disregarding issues affecting Black people. Buddy sets his sights on everything from the stereotypes designed to box Black people and the hyper-sexualisation of Black men, to culture vultures and appropriators.

The track is food for thought at a time when non-Black people expressing solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement need to move beyond the moment and ensure we are living and thinking in ways which represent the values of racial justice.
