Aporia

‘Aporia’ takes its title from the Greek, meaning ‘an irresolvable internal contradiction’.

The final teaser track for JVLY’s upcoming project, it captures the central mood of the EP - uncertainty.

JVLY lays bittersweet imagery over the rich production that has become his signature, a combination of live instruments and electronic sounds that meld RnB electro and soul, sometimes lingering at the border of the psychedelic. A melancholy vocal chop soars over smooth chords evoking xxyyxx, while JVLY’s voice, both fragile and warm, brings to mind Still Woozy and at times Tame Impala.

Aporia’s lyrics evoke another Ancient Greek term, ‘Agnorisis’ - the moment in a tragedy when a character comes to a realisation of their true self, “You thought I’d have the time to wait/ But time’s arrow hesitates... Show me how my medicine tastes/ I couldn’t have it both ways”.

This realisation will typically lead to resolution, even redemption for the character. JVLY describes the track pouring out of him, the vocals are unchanged from the first day of recording. This confidence in his instinct belies an artist whose creative conviction endures even in the face of doubt.
